Culpepper Compensation & Benefits Surveys

U.S. Pay Varies Widely by Location

Geographic location is the dominant factor influencing market pay rates for most jobs. Talent availability, cost of living, and the health of local and national economies all affect a location's prevailing wage.

U.S. geographic data cuts are based on actual employee data by zip code from participating companies. Data cuts are available for 100+ specific U.S. geographic locales summarized in 23 geographic areas and 6 pay zones.

Culpepper Compensation Surveys provide three different types of U.S. geographic data cuts.

  • Geographic Locales
We provide 100+ specific U.S. geographic locales based on actual employee data by zip code from participating companies. A locale is typically designated by a city or metropolitan area (e.g., "Atlanta" or "Seattle"). Locales may also encompass multiple cities or broader areas that are in close geographic proximity with similar pay rates (e.g., "Miami/Ft. Lauderdale" or "Dallas/Fort Worth").

  • Geographic Areas
Geographic areas amalgamate data from locales within a common geographic area (e.g., Northwest) with similar pay rates. Our U.S. geographic areas are divided into high, mid, and low paying areas (e.g., Northwest High, Northwest Mid, Northwest Low) containing locations with similar pay rates.

  • Geographic Pay Zones
Similar to geographic areas, pay zones amalgamate data from multiple geographic locations and areas with similar pay rates. They provide large geographic data cuts and are useful for organizations that want to accurately and intelligently create geographic pay differentials. Pay zones represent the highest paying regions (Pay Zone 1) through the lowest pay regions (Pay Zone 6).

Each step-up, from Geographic Locale to Geographic Area to Pay Zone, provides a larger grouping of geographic data with similar pay rates.

The table below shows the Culpepper Geographic Pay Index (CGPI) for different locales and areas in the U.S. The CGPI is calculated from actual employee pay data by zip code collected from participating companies in Culpepper Compensation Surveys.
